• Conduct legal research and analysis;
  • Assist the Legal Unit with the data entry and preliminary legal assessment of victims’ applications for participation and/or reparations;
  • Prepare summaries of important decisions;
  • Attend meetings, lectures etc when requested and prepare minutes;
  • Conduct other tasks as needed, including occasional assignments to support other aspects of the mandate the Section.
  • Conduct legal research on behalf of the CCO on all matters related to the mandate of the Detention Section;
  • Provide support to relevant sections of the Division/Registry on projects related to the mandate of the Detention Section;
  • Follow all the cases before the Court which are related to the Detention Section;
  • Provide summaries of important filings and where required, an in-depth analysis of relevant decisions;
  • Assist in drafting correspondence;
  • Providing support in the management and supervision of all activities undertaken by the Section;
  • Assist in drafting memoranda on behalf of the CCO;
  • Assist with managing the Detention Section’s various database; and
  • Provide administrative assistance on any other task that may be assigned to the Intern by the CCO.
  • In order to complete these services access will be granted to the Court’s own library as well as its wide range of legal databases.

 

Duties may include but are not limited to assisting the Section in the systematic collection and analysis of information regarding the human rights situation of countries in the Middle East and North Africa region and in the preparation of reports, documents and other written materials and, in particular, the interns may:

  • Assist Desk Officers in researching and drafting individual cases of alleged human rights violations;
  • Support Desk Officers in responding to requests for information relating to the human rights situation in the region and/ or countries concerned;
  • Assist Desk Officers in preparing and updating Country profiles, briefing packages, daily and monthly updates/reports;
  • Support Desk Officers in the preparation of relevant documents on thematic and country specific human rights issues;
  • Assist Desk Officers in taking minutes of meetings, attending side-events, Human Rights Council sessions, Treaty Bodies review and Universal Periodic Review (UPR) review; and
  • Perform other related duties as requested by supervisor, as appropriate.

 

This announcement broadcasts international internship assignments either with the Human Rights Council Branch or the Universal Periodic Review Branch, both located within the Human Rights Council and Treaty Mechanisms Division (HRCTMD) of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). Candidates will be recruited to support only one of the above-mentioned Branches but might be also exposed to the work of the other Branch. Therefore, candidates are strongly requested to clearly indicate in their application the Branch of their preference.  

  • Prepare country and legal analysis and draft legal background papers for human rights treaty bodies, related to the State party reporting procedure and treaty body-based individual complaints procedure;
  • Conduct research into and draft reports on the jurisprudence of the treaty bodies concerned;
  • Assist with the handling of individual communications received under the different treaty body complaints procedures;
  • Provide support in relation to inter-state communications submitted to the treaty bodies;
  • Assist in the preparation of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) country visits;
  • Take notes during the sessions/pre-sessions, and provide support with administrative duties such as the preparation of documentation and reference files in advance of and during the session;
  • Provide input to outreach and information tasks, including the Branch newsletter;
  • Support the work of the Universal Human Rights Index (UHRI) and the treaty body documentation databases;
  • Conduct research and develop training exercises for use in capacity building activities on reporting by States to the treaty bodies;
  • Prepare the Weekly Human Rights Treaties Branch Update;
  • Assist with preparation of reports and background papers for the General Assembly, the Human Rights Council (HRC) and the annual meeting of Chairpersons of the human rights treaty bodies;
  • Support the organization of training activities and development of relevant training material;
  • and Assist with evaluation of project proposals for funding; and perform other duties as requested by the supervisor, as appropriate.
