The JIU is the only independent external oversight body of the United Nations system, mandated to conduct system-wide reviews. Its role is to enhance management and administrative efficiency and promote greater coordination among United Nations agencies, as well as with other internal and external oversight bodies. In its reviews, the Unit identifies best practices, proposes benchmarks, makes observations and evidence-based recommendations, and facilitates information-sharing across its participating organizations, which have adopted its Statute and currently comprise 28 organizations of the United Nations system. Review teams are composed of Inspector(s), Evaluation and Inspection Officer(s), and a Research Assistant. Interns at the JIU support review teams assigned to specific reviews, under the direct supervision of the assigned Evaluation and Inspection Officer and under the technical direction of the Inspector(s) in charge of the review, with additional day-to-day guidance from the assigned Research Assistant, as applicable.

• Gathering and synthesising financial and operating information about companies, industries, and governments
• Creating and updating financial models
• Gathering market data to analyse trends and help value and price transactions
• Drafting presentations and memoranda for a wider audience within the Firm and the financial services industry
• Attending team discussions and client meetings, where you may be asked to deliver parts of a presentation.

Daily responsibilities of the intern will depend on the area of assignment within the Section and the respective Secretariat supporting the Treaty Bodies, Treaty Body Capacity Building Program or the Funds, as well as on the individual's background. Duties of the intern may include but are not limited to the following to helping service meetings of the human rights treaty bodies and their respective working groups or the meetings of the Board of Trustees of the Funds.

In particular, the intern may: Prepare country and legal analysis and draft legal background papers for human rights treaty bodies, related to the State party reporting procedure and treaty body-based individual complaints procedure; Conduct research into and draft reports on the jurisprudence of the treaty bodies concerned; Assist with the handling of individual communications received under the different treaty body complaints procedures; Provide support in relation to inter-state communications submitted to the treaty bodies; Assist in the preparation of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) country visits; Take notes during the sessions/pre-sessions, and provide support with administrative duties such as the preparation of documentation and reference files in advance of and during the session; Provide input to outreach and information tasks, including the Branch newsletter; Support the work of the Universal Human Rights Index (UHRI) and the treaty body documentation databases; Conduct research and develop training exercises for use in capacity building activities on reporting by States to the treaty bodies; Prepare the Weekly Human Rights Treaties Branch Update; Assist with preparation of reports and background papers for the General Assembly, the Human Rights Council (HRC) and the annual meeting of Chairpersons of the human rights treaty bodies; Support the organization of training activities and development of relevant training material; and Assist with evaluation of project proposals for funding; and perform other duties as requested by the supervisor, as appropriate.

 As an intern, you will be assigned to at least one of the following Hub workstreams:

1) Strategic Coordination and Planning,
2) Digital Transformation and AI,
3) Data and Analytics,
4) Human Rights Risk Analysis and Early Warning.

Our interns report to full-time professional staff and work as full members of our team. Interns will pursue projects designed to create lasting impact, while gaining valuable insights into the broader work of the UN System. 

• Analyse the financial impact of stressed market conditions
• Analyse variances in capital requirements
• Take part in developing market and credit risk reports and processes
• Provide business analysis and process improvement support
• Identify, measure, and analyse the aggregate portfolio risk in stress scenarios
• Perform company and industry level financial analysis of Morgan Stanley’s counterparties to assess their creditworthiness
• Monitor key news across financial markets and relevant industries
• Prepare portfolio stress testing analysis of credit risk exposures on lending and derivatives products
• Participate in innovative projects related to data analysis, visualization, and process automation.
