The internship is located in the Joint Inspection Unit (JIU) at the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG). The JIU is the only independent external oversight body of the United Nations system, mandated to conduct system-side evaluations, inspections and investigations. Its role is to enhance management and administrative efficiency and promote greater coordination among UN agencies, as well as with other internal and external oversight bodies. In its reviews, the Unit identifies best practices, proposes benchmarks, and facilitates information-sharing across its participating organizations that have adopted its Statute, which are currently 28 organizations of the UN System. Review teams are composed by Inspector(s), Evaluation and Inspection Officer(s), and a Research Assistant.
The purpose of the interns at the JIU is to assist the review teams and fulfill ad hoc demands of the Unit. The internship provides an opportunity for interns to gain hands-on experience in the field of oversight and evaluation at the UN. Outputs and specific work assignments will be discussed and agreed with every candidate during the interview.
In-person and remote
The Intern will have the opportunity to learn and support the overall work of the Sector’s mission. Activities will vary depending on the requirements of the assignment. Specific Terms of Reference and learning objectives will form part of the contract. The work entrusted to interns falls under one or more of the following categories as per the requirements/needs of each team.
Programme and Project Support:
- Participate in the preparation and review project documents. Draft notes and prepare technical annexes.
- Prepare conceptual framework / concept notes on new areas of work or development challenges.
- Collect, organize and analyze data.
- Contribute to the production/preparation of documents, working papers, and conceptual framework/concept notes on area of work or development challenges.
- Assist in the development of technical support in the development of new interventions or projects.
Research and Knowledge Management:
- Undertake specific research and reviews to produce well defined aspects or segments of work products, including publications, documents and project proposals.
- Contribute to the preparation of knowledge and communication products, materials for advocacy and outreach, related to area of work.
- Participate in meetings and seminars.
Partnerships:
- Analyze and compile background data for potential partnerships and fundraising events and opportunities. Arrange briefings, visits, tours, meetings and other related activities to support collaborative activities.
- Liaise and build networks with officials in national administrations, researchers, other international organisations and member country Delegations.
Operations Support:
- Provide administrative and logistical support in the planning and organization of meetings, events, workshops, and conferences in coordination with other staff.
- Support the preparation of specific budgets, financial and accounting documents, and project documentation and evaluation.

We are looking for motivated interns to join the Innovation and Analytics Hub (the Hub) at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva. OHCHR offers internship opportunities in the following workstreams:
Workstream 1: Strategic Coordination and Planning
- Assist in the and coordination of strategic planning meetings, communications and outreach activities, training workshops, webinars, round-tables etc., including by drafting relevant materials. • Support the tracking and analysis of strategic initiatives and their implementation. • Support the establishment of an Office-wide Community of Practice on data and analytics, digital transformation, innovation and behavioral science.
Workstream 2: Digital Technology, Data and Innovation
- Contribute to the planning, design, and implementation of digital transformation projects. • Assist in the development and deployment of data analytics tools and platforms. • Support the integration of innovative technologies into existing workflows. • Provide technical support and training for digital tools and platforms.
Workstream 3: Risk Analysis and Early Warning
- Monitor and analyze emerging human rights risks and protracted crisis situations • Contribute to the development of human rights risk assessments and early warning reports. • Assist in the coordination of human rights risk analysis activities • Support the preparation of briefings and presentations on risk analysis, including for UN prevention processes.
Workstream 4: Global Analytics and Field Support
- Contribute to the collection, analysis, and visualization of data from field offices. • Assist in the development of analytics reports and dashboards for decision-making. • Support the dissemination of innovative tools and best practices to field offices. • Provide technical assistance and training to field offices on data analytics and reporting.
Media and Social Media Monitoring
- Monitor media and format the Monthly Review, featuring news articles relevant to developments and country programmes, as well as media coverage of the TFV’s activities and events.
- Conduct research on media trends related to international justice and victim rights, providing insights to the communications team.
- Monitor social media platforms for relevant discussions, trends, and engagement metrics.
- Support new website/social media projects by assisting in the design of infographics and visuals.
- Assist with photography projects, including organizing archive, inserting metadata, compiling selected photos for specific themes and projects, and securing permission to use external photographs.
- Help upload an archive of videos onto our server and insert metadata into photographs.
- Contribute to the creation of engaging content for social media posts that align with the TFV's messaging and objectives.
General Assistance
- Help maintain the TFV media mailing list and assist in mapping media sources and developing targeted communication strategies for various audiences.
- Assist journalists at the Court’s Information Desk during key engagements, providing them with badges to access the media centre and other practical information.
- Escort visitors and arrange meetings when necessary.
- Take notes at specific meetings and prepare summaries for internal distribution.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for improving communication strategies and outreach efforts.
